RLD - Reflexology Lymph Drainage
I am an approved Reflexology Lymph Drainage Practitioner, trained by Sally Kay.
RLD is an award-winning reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet.
This gentle, relaxing and enjoyable technique works on the lymphatic system in the body and has been shown to reduce volume on the affected limb/s.
It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay whilst working in Cancer Care.
RLD was originally used to support people going through cancer care and those who develop lymphoedema but people receiving the treatment have found that it’s supportive in many other areas
Arthritis – Chronic Fatigue – Sinus Problems – Muscular Tension – Asthma – Fibromyalgia - Migraines – Aches & Pains – Headaches – ME
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK (2011), the lifetime risk of developing it in the UK is 1:8 for women and 1:1014 for men. Approximately 20% of these patients develop secondary lymphoedema of the arm following treatment for breast cancer.
The effectiveness of the treatment for supporting people with secondary Lymphoedema has been researched and the method includes using quantitative and qualitative data collection.
Measurements of the affected arm are taken to compare the volume size of the affected and the unaffected arm, and to compare any improvement in volume before and after the treatment. Outcomes measures are also used to chart any changes in quality of life and everyday well-being.
Below is a brief case study of one of my clients.
Case Study
Over the 6 weeks my client kept me updated on any changes in her arm, the comfort, her sleep pattern and her overall well being.
To my clients surprise she was reporting her sleep had improved from waking every couple of hours to getting on average of 6 hours unbroken sleep.
She had noticed her skin on the right arm wasn’t as tight, it was feeling softer and had noticed one of her veins was more visible due to the swelling reduction.
By the end of the last session, my client had no back pain either. To say my client was blown away was an understatement.
My client has kept in touch and continues to do well.
We see each other once a month as a maintenance for her, and she truly enjoys the relaxation.
Results
My client was diagnosed with breast cancer and under went treatment 6 years ago. 3 years later after going for a routine blood test, the nurse injected into her right arm the side she had, had her breast removed causing Lymphoedema. My client is lucky she can mange most daily tasks, but the swelling and constant discomfort does get her down. She experiences broken sleep, discomfort in her back, her skin of the arm feels tight and rough to the touch.
When I offered this treatment to my client she was very sceptical. Even though she understood the relaxation side of reflexology, she couldn’t understand how it could help her swollen arm, sleep pattern and overall mood. She agreed to 6 treatments.
With each treatment I take before and after measurements so we can compare and see the changes. Left is before and right is after the treatment. We can see a reduction in right arm and also the skin tone has improved
Clients History
Each treatment will be tailored to your needs by incorporating an in-depth consultation to discuss your presenting conditions and symptoms, as well as previous medical history.
This information is used to create a bespoke treatment plan that is designed, specifically to target your needs which will be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure the treatments meet your needs.
Whilst reflexology can be enjoyed as a one-off relaxation session, the therapeutic effects of reflexology are cumulative.
A course of six treatments is recommended to experience any changes to acute or long-term conditions.
After an initial course, I would recommend coming for a session once every two to four weeks as a preventative and maintenance programme. Ad hoc session of 1 hour £60
I truly believe that holistic treatments are not a luxury, but rather a stepping stone on the pathway to wellness.
